Starting Here!

Starting Here!

It has been hard to find the right place to start telling our story. There is so much history that brought us here and so much vision that keeps us moving forward. Where do you jump into something like this? Here is as good a place as any!

Over the years, there has been a reoccurring theme in the conversations at our house and a steady draw to the idea of working together in a business. We want it to be a business that would permit us to spend our time in terms of what we valued most: declaring the faithfulness of God to the next generation.

We started referring to this vague notion as a “family business ministry”. We didn’t have a specific name or location in mind. We didn’t even have a lot of clarity on the product or service we would offer.

But in 2016, my husband was presented with an opportunity to “un-JOB”.  Our decision to move from Pennsylvania to Virginia would solidify both the location and the name for this grand endeavor.

Today, Church & Main, LLC is providentially located at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street in Appomattox, Virginia. It is at this intersection we work. The family business ministry is dedicated to a biblical worldview, restoring to the family the responsibilities that God says are ours, and faithfully stewarding the resources entrusted to our care. The details of all that are still unfolding.

The impetus to step onto a virtual platform came with the 2020 coronavirus quarantine. We had started marketing our space as a boutique venue, but as a non-essential business, that operation was restricted. So here we are talking about our family’s story, homeschool, business, and biblical orientation to life.

My husband has made an acronym for our last name, “Wilk”. We named our blog “WILK & Wife” because we are Workers In the Lord’s Kingdom, and we are in this together. So, the plan is that sometimes he will write, sometimes I will write. Sometimes we will have guest writers, and we may even jump the technology hurdle to podcasts or video (because I can talk faster than I can write!). We intend to write here as we recognize the need and interest, always in terms of God’s gracious call on our lives and His instructions to the family.

We know that for many, Covid-19 is the storm of a lifetime. It is shaking what can be shaken; it is exposing the foundations of their lives; it is testing the stability of our nation. When it is over, we will collectively assess the damage, salvage what we can, and do the hard work of rebuilding. In the mean time, our faith will be proved true or we will find ourselves lacking.

Whatever the circumstances are that facilitate a reorientation, the obvious question becomes - How and where do we start to put the pieces back together? Consider Psalm 127. Without the Lord our labor (our work, our building, our watching, our effort) is all in vain.

We have been given the opportunity to evaluate our priorities as individuals, families, and as communities. Prayerfully consider joining us as we learn to navigate our days in terms of God’s law-word and His call on our lives.

May we be found faithful.

WILK & Wife

Unless the Lord build the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
— Psalm 127:1
